محمد شفيق غربال مؤرخ مصري بارز، يُعتبر رائدًا في مجال الدراسات التاريخية وأول من أسس مدرسة تاريخية لدراسة تاريخ مصر الحديث. وُلد في الإسكندرية عام 1894م، حيث تلقى تعليمه الأساسي والثانوي، ثم انتقل إلى القاهرة لدراسة التاريخ في مدرسة المعلمين العليا، وتخرج منها عام 1915م. أُوفد إلى إنجلترا خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى، وحصل على بكاليوس التاريخ الحديث من جامعة ليفربول عام 1919م، ثم نال الماجستير من جامعة لندن عام 1924م عن رسالته "بداية المسألة المصرية وظهور محمد علي"، بإشراف المؤرخ البريطاني أرنولد توينبي. بعد عودته إلى مصر، عُين مدرسًا للتاريخ، وتدرج في المناصب الأكاديمية حتى أصبح أول مصري يتولى كرسي الأستاذية في قسم التاريخ بكلية الآداب بجامعة القاهرة عام 1936م. تولى لاحقًا منصب وكيل الكلية ثم عميدًا لها، وأسهم في إنشاء الجمعية المصرية للدراسات التاريخية والمتحف المصري. ترك غربال مجموعة من المؤلفات القيمة مثل "بداية المسألة المصرية وظهور محمد علي" و"محمد علي الكبير"، بالإضافة إلى تحقيقه لمخطوطات ودراساته حول العوامل التاريخية في بناء الأمة العربية. حصل على جائزة الدولة التقديرية في العلوم الاجتماعية، واختير لعضوية لجنة من المؤرخين لتكون مستشارين لليونسكو. توفي عام 1961م في القاهرة إثر مرض ألم به، تاركًا وراءه إرثًا علميًا بارزًا.
