Der fremdartig gekleidete junge Mann lenkte seinen hochbeinigen Grauschimmel zu einer Stelle am Ufer, wo ein Bächlein in den Fluss mündete. Ein halb geschlossenes Wehr staute das zufließende Wasser zu einem kleinen, stillen Teich, auf dem ein Entenpärchen vor sich hin paddelte. Schwärme winziger Mücken tanzten im milden Licht der herbstlichen Nachmittagssonne. Der Mann in der welschen Tracht sprang ab und ließ seine Stute saufen. Sein Blick schweifte derweil umher, und er entdeckte nicht weit entfernt eine alte Buche, deren Äste bis fast auf den Boden hingen. Geduldig wartete er, bis sich sein Pferd sattgetrunken hatte, dann führte er es hinüber zum Baum und kletterte leichtfüßig ein Stück das Geäst hinauf. Von hier oben, dachte er, müsste man es doch schon sehen können!
Er spähte durch das mattgrüne Laub, und tatsächlich, da in der Ferne waren sie, die Hügel, zwischen denen die Stadt lag: Auf dem einen deutlich zu erkennen die wehrhafte Altenburg, auf dem anderen, dem weinbewachsenen Michelsberg, das ehrwürdige Kloster. Und dazwischen der Domberg mit dem riesigen, viertürmigen Kaiserdom, der sich mit würdevoller Majestät über den ziegelroten Hausdächern erhob.
Der junge Mann sprang auf den Boden. Nun war er kurz vor dem Ziel. Er zog den Sattelgurt wieder fester und stieg auf. Noch eine Stunde den Weg an der Regnitz entlang, so schätzte er, dann würde er Bamberg, die alte fränkische Bischofsstadt, erreicht haben.
Vor dem Langgasser Tor passierte der Fremde die Richtstatt. Der Galgen war leer, doch ein paar frisch aufgeworfene Grabhügel zeugten davon, dass die Stadt für Rechtsbrecher keine Gnade kannte. Ein Schwarm Raben fühlte sich von einer streunenden Katze gestört, flatterte auf und flog unter lautem Gekrächze davon. Irgendwo rief leise ein Käuzchen, als wolle es Pferd und Reiter vor dem Entsetzlichen warnen, was kommen sollte …
Am Tor selber war viel Betrieb. Es ging auf Abend zu, also verließen die Bauern, die ihre Waren auf dem Markt verkauft hatten, die Stadt, um noch bei Tageslicht heimzukommen. Und die Bürger, die außerhalb ihre Felder bestellt hatten, strebten ihnen entgegen, Körbe mit Äpfeln oder Gemüse auf dem Rücken. Bei Einbruch der Nacht würde der Wächter die Torflügel schließen; wer dann noch nicht in der Stadt war, dem blieb nichts anderes übrig, als bis zum Aufsperren am nächsten Morgen draußen zu nächtigen.
Der junge Mann auf seinem Grauschimmel musste warten, weil ein ausfahrender Marktwagen ein Fass verlor und eine Zeitlang das Tor versperrte. Er ließ die Zügel sinken und zog aus dem abgeschabten, flachen Lederbeutel, den er um den Hals trug, ein zusammengefaltetes Stück Papier hervor. Eigentlich kannte er den Inhalt schon auswendig; dennoch überflog er jetzt, wo er ans Ende seiner Reise gelangt war, die Zeilen noch einmal.
»Gelibter Sohn, mein Corneli,
Gottes Schutz und Schirm allzeyt zuvor und deines Vaters vielleycht lezten Gruß. So hat denn nun der Allmechtige in seiner unendtlichen Weisheyt beschloßen, meine Zeyt auff Erden wohl baldt zu endigen. Du weißt aus meinen lezten Brieffen, daß mein Hertz seit Jahren schwach und mein Körper geprechlich ist. Danck meiner und des Apotheckers Kunst warn mir wohl mehr Lebensjahr vergönnt als vilen andern, aber nun vermein ich, ich hör schon die Engleyn im Himmel musizirn. Du wirst unschwer auß meiner Schrifft ersehn, wie schwehr es mir fällt, die Feder zu führen, ach, mir bleibt kein lange Frist mehr. Vor jetzo dreien Wochen hat mich zum zweitten Mal ein Stoß vor die Brußt getroffen, so starck, daß ich nit mehr athmen konnt. Der lincke Arm ist von Schmertzen geplagt, und mein Hertz flattert zuzeitten wie ein kleins Vögelein. Auß Schwachheyt meines Leibs kann ich seither kaum das Kranckenbett verlaßen, und ich spühr das Leben auß mir fließen wie ein steter Strahl Bluts. Der Weißdorn, dessen getrocknete Blätter und Frücht mir als Tinctura immer wohl gethan haben, hülfft nit mehr, gleich wie der rothe Fingerhut, die Digitalis purpurea, die du mir in deinem lezten Brieff empfolen hast.
Deine Mutter tregt die Gewißheyt meines baldigen Dahinscheydens mit der Stärcke, die ich stets an ihr gelibt und bewundert habe. Doch ich weiß auch, daß sie sich fürchtet, was wohl werden soll, wenn ich nit mehr bin.
Darumb, mein Sohn, ist es nunmehro für dich an der Zeitt, heimb zu komen und dein Erbe anzutrethen. In den 8 Jahrn, die du in der Frembde warst, hast du die Künste der Medicin genugsam studirt; du wirst sie in deiner Heymatstadt wol anzuwenden wißen. Deine Mutter hat deiner lang genug entbehrt, sie wirdt dich nun brauchen. Und wenn Got will, so lässet er mich in seiner Gnadt noch so langk am Leben, daß ich dich zum Abschiedt segnen kann.

Cornelius faltete den Brief wieder zusammen und steckte ihn zurück in den Lederbeutel. Das Papier war schon ganz abgegriffen und begann an den Bruchstellen auseinanderzufallen, so oft hatte er es unterwegs hervorgezogen und gelesen. Drei Tage nach dem Erhalt des Schreibens hatte er sich von Bologna, wo er ein Studium der Anatomie absolvierte, aufgemacht, immer in der Hoffnung, seinen Vater noch lebend anzutreffen. Bei Regen und Gewittersturm hatte er die Alpen überquert, hatte sich und seinem Pferd keinen Tag Rast gegönnt.
Cornelius zügelte seine Stute, als der Torwart grüßend seine Pike hob und ihn ansprach.
»Euren Namen, Fremder, woher des Wegs und wohin in Bamberg?«
»Cornelius Weinmann, Doktor der Medizin und Bürger dieser Stadt. Ich kehre vom Studium in Italien zurück.«
Der Wächter senkte seinen Spieß und nickte ehrerbietig. »Willkommen daheim, Herr. Ein studierter Arzt ist immer vonnöten.«
Cornelius ließ die Zügel lang und ritt im Zockelschritt durch die Lange Gasse. An den prunkvollen Fassaden der Bürgerhäuser ließ sich unschwer erkennen, dass dies eine der vornehmsten Straßen der Stadt war. Hier lebten Bürgermeister und Räte, reiche Handwerker und Kaufleute, wohlhabende Wirte und Rechtsgelehrte. Cornelius kannte sie alle, die Haans und Neudeckers, die Moorhaupts und Dietmayers und wie sie noch hießen. Als Stadtphysikus gehörte sein Vater zu den höchsten Kreisen, und Cornelius hatte zusammen mit den Kindern der Reichen die Lateinschule besucht.
Während der junge Arzt den Blick schweifen ließ, stellte er fest, dass sich Bamberg seit seinem Weggang vor acht Jahren kaum verändert hatte. Alte Erinnerungen kamen wieder. Fast schon hatte er die Enge der Inselstadt vergessen, die ihre natürliche Begrenzung durch die beiden Regnitzarme fand, und auch die unauflösliche Verflechtung der Stadt mit dem Wasser, sichtbar an den vielen Brücken und Mühlen, den behäbig vorbeiziehenden Lastkähnen und den krummen Häusern der Fischer am Flussufer. Und natürlich die allgegenwärtige Dominanz der Kirche: den herrlichen, ehrfurchtgebietenden Dom auf seinem steilen Hügel, das alte Kloster am Michelsberg, wo der Heilige Otto begraben lag, die Stifte und Kirchen, die reichen Besitzungen der Domherren.
Je näher Cornelius seinem Elternhaus kam, das am Grünen Markt lag, desto klammer wurde ihm ums Herz. Würde er seinen Vater noch lebend finden? Und seine Mutter? Ob sie inzwischen grau geworden war? Seine Zeit in der Ferne kam ihm vor wie eine Ewigkeit. Die Rückkehr war ihm nicht leicht gefallen; nach einem Leben in den großen und modernen Hochburgen der Medizinkunde – Köln, Prag, Padua und Bologna – war ihm die Beschränktheit seiner beschaulichen Heimatstadt nicht gerade verlockend erschienen. Aber schließlich hatte er die Verpflichtung, sich um seine Mutter zu kümmern, und es war auch immer klar gewesen, dass er einmal in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters treten würde. Nun war die Zeit gekommen.
Das Doktorhaus war eines der kleineren Gebäude am Ende des Grünen Markts, des Hauptplatzes der Bürgerstadt. Es hatte nur zwei Stockwerke, von denen das obere ein wenig über das untere hinauskragte, und ein spitzgiebeliges, ziegelgedecktes Dach. Anders als die Nachbarhäuser war es noch ganz aus Fachwerk gebaut. Über der zweiflügeligen Haustür war auf den fränkischroten Putz das Zeichen des Arztes gemalt: ein kugeliges gelbes Harnschau-Glas in einem blauen Quadrat. Darunter konnte man die verblasste Inschrift lesen: »Ich bin ein Doctor der Artzney / an dem Harn kann ich sehen frey / was Kranckheit ein Menschn thut beladn / dem kan ich helffen mit Gotts gnadn«.
Cornelius stieg ab, klemmte sein Bücherbündel unter den Arm und band das Pferd an dem dafür bestimmten Haken unter dem Fenster an. Dann läutete er das kleine Messingglöckchen, das so niedrig an der Wand angebracht war, dass auch Kinder, die man nach dem Arzt schickte, an den Schwengel herankamen. Die Tür ging auf. Eine hakennasige alte Magd, zahnlos wie ein Säugling, schielte misstrauisch unter ihrem schwarzen Kopftuch hervor und musterte ihn.
»Es ist geschlossen«, raunzte sie. »Geht auf den Kaulberg zum Doktor … «
Dann schlug sie die Hände über dem Kopf zusammen. »Jesusmariaundjosef, der junge Herr! Ach Gott, ach Gott, Kind, Corneli, dass du endlich da bist!«
Sie nahm ihm den Packen Bücher ab und zog ihn in den Hausflur.
»Lisbeth, komme ich noch in der Zeit? Wie geht es dem Vater?« Cornelius entwand sich ihrem Griff und löste die Kordel seines Umhangs. Die Alte schüttelte den Kopf und tat einen kleinen Schluchzer.
»Ach Bub, vor drei Tagen ist er zum Herrn eingegangen, ganz friedlich und ruhig. Er hat bloß noch einmal nach Luft geschnappt, und dann war er für immer still.« Sie bekreuzigte sich. »Deine Mutter ist im Garten, komm.«
Sie nahm Cornelius am Handgelenk, so wie sie es getan hatte, als er noch ein Kind war, und zog ihn durch den weiten Flur zur Hintertür.
Draußen im kleinen Gärtchen blühten die bunten Astern in üppiger Pracht. Efeu überwucherte die Mauern, und der alte Zwetschgenbaum hing voll praller violettblauer Früchte. Cornelius trat hinaus in die Sonne und ging den gepflasterten Weg entlang bis zum kleinen Schuppen, hinter dessen Ecke ein steingefasstes Brünnlein mit Schwengelpumpe das Doktorhaus mit stets sauberem Wasser versorgte. Neben diesem Brunnen wuchs ein alter Hollerbusch, und davor stand seit Cornelius’ Kinderzeit eine hölzerne Bank, der Lieblingsplatz seiner Mutter.
Sie hatte ihn schon kommen sehen, und nun streckte sie die Arme nach ihm aus. Die Tränen liefen ihr übers Gesicht. Als er bei ihr war, sank er auf die Knie und umfasste ihre Schultern. Sie nahm sein Gesicht in beide Hände.
»Wenn er doch bloß noch so lange gelebt hätte«, schluchzte sie und küsste seine Stirn und Wangen. »Du warst immer sein Ein und Alles. Und gestern haben wir ihn begraben.«
Auch Cornelius stieg jetzt das Wasser in die Augen.
»Es ging nicht schneller.« Er wiegte seine Mutter tröstend hin und her. Alt war sie geworden. Er konnte sich nicht erinnern, dass ihr Gesicht so faltig gewesen war, und auch die Haare, die unter der Haube hervorlugten, waren nicht mehr dunkelbraun, sondern fast weiß. Klein und zerbrechlich war sie schon immer gewesen, aber jetzt, als er sie hielt, kam sie ihm winzig vor. Nach einer Weile setzte er sich neben sie, und sie sprachen wehmütig über alte Zeiten, Krankheit und Tod des Vaters, endlich die Zukunft. Als die Sonne gelb wie Honig hinter den Ästen des Zwetschgenbaums sank, löste sie sich von ihm und lächelte unter Tränen.
»Komm, lass uns hineingehen. Du musst hungrig sein und durstig.«
Er nickte und stand auf. Dann hob er sie vorsichtig hoch und trug sie hinein in die Stube. Sie war leicht wie eine Feder. Drinnen setzte er sie auf dem bequemen Räderstuhl ab, den man vor so langer Zeit für sie gebaut hatte, nachdem die Hoffnung geschwunden war, dass sie jemals wieder gehen würde. Kurz nach Cornelius’ Geburt hatte ein Fuhrwerk sie überrollt; tagelang war sie zwischen Leben und Tod geschwebt. Wäre ihr kleiner Sohn nicht gewesen, so sagte sie später, dann hätte sie den Unfall wohl nicht überlebt. Sie wurde wieder gesund, doch seit diesem Tag konnte sie ihre Beine weder spüren noch bewegen. In bewundernswerter Weise ertrug sie ihr Schicksal, ohne Selbstmitleid und ohne Klagen, eine starke Frau, vor deren Kraft, das Leben zu meistern, die ganze Stadt Hochachtung hatte.
»Du wirst die Offizin in bestem Zustand vorfinden, mein Lieber«, sagte sie später, als sie bei einer Mahlzeit aus Räucherfisch und Zeiler Wein zusammensaßen. »Die Lisbeth und ich haben das letzte Vierteljahr alles so gepflegt, als ob dein Vater noch jeden Tag darin gearbeitet hätte. Wenn du willst, kannst du also schon morgen in der Stadt bekanntmachen, dass du die Nachfolge antrittst.«
Cornelius spülte den letzten Bissen Regnitzforelle hinunter. »Ein paar Neuerungen habe ich schon vor, Mutter. Schließlich hat sich die Medizin um einiges verändert, seit der Vater studiert hat. Nicht alles kann mehr mit der alten Lehre von den vier Säften erklärt werden. Wir wissen jetzt alles über den Aufbau des menschlichen Körpers, weil wir an den Universitäten Leichen sezieren. Und es gibt neue Heilmittel, chymische Substanzen, die man durch Destillation gewinnt. Hast du gewusst, dass man inzwischen die Temperatur des Körpers messen kann? Und dass man annimmt, das Blut wird vom Herz im Kreis herumgepumpt? Und dass es große Ärzte gibt, die fordern, man solle die Wirkung neuer Arzneien an Tieren erproben?«
»Aber die Mittel und Kuren deines Vaters haben immer geholfen … «
»Immer? Vieles war sicherlich richtig.« Cornelius wollte seine Mutter nicht verletzen. »Aber, siehst du, heutzutage werden eben gegen die Fallsucht keine jungen Schwalben mehr verabreicht. Da gibt es wirksamere, chymische Stoffe. Und man überlässt das Schneiden auch nicht mehr den Badern und Wundärzten. Wir jungen Ärzte können das selber viel besser.«
Maria Weinmann strich ihrem Sohn liebevoll über die Wange und schmunzelte. »Wie heißt der alte Spruch? Ein junger Arzt braucht drei Friedhöfe«, neckte sie. Dann wurde sie ernst. »Du wirst schon das Richtige tun, mein Lieber. Dein Vater wäre so stolz auf dich, das weiß ich.«
Die Mohrenapotheke lag in der Inselstadt, beim Aufgang zur Oberen Brücke auf der linken Seite. Sie war die jüngste der drei Bamberger Apotheken, außer ihr gab es noch die Hofapotheke an der Schütt, am Fuße des Dombergs, und die Unterapotheke an der Ecke, wenn man von der Unteren Brücke das Zwerchgässlein aufwärts ging. Alle drei hatten ihr gutes Auskommen, war doch Bamberg eine Stadt mit etlichen tausend Einwohnern, und jeder von ihnen hatte seine Gebrechen und Krankheiten, seine Wehwehchen, Gebresten und Leibesplagen, die sämtlich kuriert sein wollten. Wer eine Brustlatwerge oder einen Kräuterzucker, ein Fläschchen Schneckensirup oder Lavendelöl zu kaufen suchte, konnte schon von weitem den armlangen Mohren erkennen, der über dem mittleren der drei Rundbögen im Erdgeschoss thronte, einen wilden Gesellen mit goldener Federkrone, Federrock und Goldstiefeln. In der Linken hielt der Schwarze einen Stößel, mit dem er in einem Standmörser stampfte, um seinen erhobenen rechten Arm ringelte sich eine goldene Schlange. So bewachte die Figur den Eingang, durch den zu treten allerdings nur den Bewohnern des Hauses oder einem der ansässigen Ärzte gestattet war. Gewöhnliche Kundschaft hatte ihr Begehr durch das links neben dem Eingangstor befindliche Verkaufsfenster zu nennen und erhielt dann das Gewünschte aus der Offizin hinausgereicht.
In der geräumigen Wohnküche im hinteren Teil des Apothekerhauses saß die ganze Familie beim Abendessen um den runden Eichenholztisch. Das Feuer auf der Kochstelle flackerte noch und verbreitete angenehme Wärme. Es roch nach gebratenen Zwiebeln, ausgelassenem Speck, sauren Linsen und Kümmelbrot.
Abdias Wolff, immer noch in der Apothekerstracht, dem langen dunklen Umhang mit der typischen runden Mütze, legte den Zinnlöffel beiseite.
»Habt ihr schon gewusst? Der junge Weinmann ist wieder daheim.«
»Der Cornelius?« Johanna, die gerade eine Scheibe Brot mit Schmalz bestreichen wollte, hielt inne. Sie war die älteste Tochter des Apothekers, führte den Haushalt und war ihm eine Stütze im Geschäft, seit ihre Mutter vor Jahren im Kindbett gestorben war. »Na, hoffentlich ist er inzwischen netter als früher.«
»Wieso?« Antoni meldete sich neugierig zu Wort, mit vollen Backen kauend, sodass man ihn kaum verstand.
»Weil der Cornelius Weinmann früher immer alle Mädchen geärgert hat.« Das war Dorothea, das mittlere der Apothekerskinder. »So wie du.«
Antoni kicherte. Der Zehnjährige, ein weißblonder, sommersprossiger Wirbelwind, hatte es faustdick hinter den Ohren; seinen beiden großen Schwestern fiel es oft schwer, ihn zu bändigen. Und der Vater ließ ihm alles durchgehen, weil er seiner verstorbenen Mutter wie aus dem Gesicht geschnitten war. Jetzt versuchte er gerade, sich einen Schluck Wein aus Johannas Becher zu stibitzen, und sie schlug ihm auf die Finger. Da klopfte es, und unvorhergesehener Besuch trat in die Stube.
Es war Heinrich Flock, Ratsherr und einer der reichsten Kaufleute der Stadt. Er nahm den breitkrempigen Hut ab und kratzte sich etwas verlegen am ergrauten Hinterkopf.
»Ich wollte nicht beim Abendmahl stören. Darf ich mich einen Augenblick zu Euch setzen, Abdias?« Er wechselte einen schnellen, verstohlenen Blick mit Dorothea, auf deren Wangen plötzlich ein paar rote Flecken erblühten.
»Nanu, gibt’s was zu bereden?« Der Apotheker scheuchte Johannas Kater von dem einzigen freien Stuhl, auf dem er sich zusammengerollt hatte, und wies einladend mit der Hand auf die Sitzfläche. »Oder braucht Ihr eine Arznei?«
»Nein, nein, mein Freund, ich bin kerngesund.« Flock ließ sich nieder und ergriff dankbar den Becher Wein, den ihm Johanna eingeschenkt hatte. »Es geht um etwas ganz anderes. Nämlich … « Er wusste nicht recht, wie er es anfangen sollte, trank einen Schluck und fiel dann gleich mit der Tür ins Haus. »Also, seit meine Frau, die Margaretha selig, das Zeitliche gesegnet hat, ist es schon recht einsam um mich geworden. Das Haus ist leer, und ich sitze allein darinnen wie ein alter Bär in seiner Höhle. Dabei soll der Mensch nicht für sich sein, das steht schließlich in der Heiligen Schrift. Und ich bin doch noch kein alter Mann, steh nach wie vor gut in Saft und Kraft. Und ein Sohn fehlt mir auch noch, der das Geschäft einmal erben könnt … « Er druckste ein bisschen herum. »Was ich damit eigentlich sagen will, ist … die Dorothea und ich … wir sind uns gut.«
Die Köpfe der Familie fuhren herum, und alle sahen die jüngere der beiden Schwestern an, die nun endgültig im ganzen Gesicht hochrot wurde.
»Ich weiß schon«, fuhr Flock fort, »dass wir im Alter recht unterschiedlich sind, aber so etwas muss einer Ehe keinen Abbruch tun. Im Gegenteil, manchmal ist es für so ein junges Fohlen gut, wenn es mit Erfahrung und Ruhe gepaart wird. Und ich kann Euch versichern, dass ich der Dorothea von Herzen zugetan bin, wie es ein Jüngerer nicht besser sein kann. Dass sie bei mir ein gutes Leben hätte und es ihr an nichts fehlen würde, wisst Ihr selber. Ja.« Er blickte in die Runde. »Ich möcht Euch also, lieber Abdias, um die Hand Eurer Tochter bitten.«
Der Apotheker blinzelte und kraulte eine ganze Weile seinen graugesträhnten Bart. Dorothea traute sich nicht, vom Tisch aufzusehen. Johanna räumte geschäftig die Reste des Abendessens vom Tisch, um etwas zu tun zu haben. Nur Antoni saß da und grinste übers ganze Gesicht, hatte er doch längst von der Sache gewusst, weil er seiner Schwester heimlich hinterherspioniert hatte.
Schließlich räusperte sich Abdias geräuschvoll. »Mein lieber Freund, das kommt jetzt schon ein wenig überraschend für uns alle. Die Dorothea ist ja noch recht jung. Ich habe eigentlich immer gedacht, dass die Johanna als die Ältere … « Er verstummte.
Johanna gab es einen Stich. … zuerst heiratet, beendete sie im Geiste den Satz ihres Vaters. Ja, das hatte sie auch gedacht, vor allem, seit sie ihrem Jugendfreund Hans Schramm versprochen war. Zwei Jahre waren eine lange Zeit – aber er bestand immer noch darauf zu warten, so lange, bis er zum Ratsschreiber befördert würde und ihr ein angenehmes Leben bieten konnte. Er war eben ein vernünftiger Mann, ihr Verlobter, auch wenn Johanna schon ein wenig enttäuscht war, dass er das Warten so leicht aushielt. Jetzt gab sie sich einen kleinen Ruck und lächelte in die Runde.
»Ach wisst ihr, der Hans und ich, wir sind ja schon so gut wie verheiratet. Es dauert bestimmt nicht mehr lang, bis er eine bessere Stellung beim Rat bekommt. Also, mir macht es nichts aus, wenn mein Schwesterlein vor mir unter die Haube kommt.« Dabei drückte sie Dorotheas Hand, und diese sah sie mit einem dankbaren Blick an.
Abdias Wolff musterte seine beiden Töchter nachdenklich. Die eine, Johanna, kam nach ihm, mit ihrer sonnengetönten Haut, den kastanienbraunen Locken und den dunklen Augen. Dorothea hingegen sah ihrer Mutter ähnlich: rötliches Haar, hellblaue Augen, ein blasser, sommersprossiger Teint und genau dieselben Grübchen, wenn sie lachte. Der Apotheker dachte mit Wehmut an seine verstorbene Frau. Antonija war Niederländerin gewesen, er hatte sie kennengelernt, als ihn seine Lehr- und Wanderzeit damals bis nach Amsterdam geführt hatte. Aus Liebe war sie mit ihm zurück in seine Heimat gegangen, hatte ihr Land und ihre Familie verlassen, um mit ihm eine neue zu gründen. Eine treusorgende Ehefrau war sie ihm gewesen, hatte ihm mit Freuden zwei Töchter geboren. Das Glück schien über Jahre hinweg fast vollkommen. Bis schließlich der Nachzügler Antoni auf die Welt kam, der ersehnte Sohn, der sie das Leben kostete. Am Fieber war sie gestorben, und alle Medizin ihres Mannes hatte ihr nicht helfen können. Das war nun zehn Jahre her, und Abdias vermisste sie manchmal noch wie am ersten Tag. Wenn er sie jetzt fragen könnte, wie würde sie wohl entscheiden? Er seufzte und überlegte eine ganze Zeit. Auch wenn er so manche väterlichen Bedenken hatte, wer war er, dem Glück seiner Tochter entgegenzustehen?
»Thea, sag du«, wandte er sich an seine jüngere Tochter, »magst du ihn denn haben? Über deinen Kopf hinweg will ich nicht entscheiden.«
Dorothea nickte heftig. »Ach ja, Vater, ich nehm ihn mit Freuden zum Mann.«
»Dann will ich mich nicht dagegenstellen. Ihr sollt meinen Segen bekommen.« Abdias stand auf und holte einen Krug Apfelbranntwein mit vier kleinen Zinnbechern vom Regal. »Lasst uns darauf einen Trunk tun.«
Dorothea stieß einen Juchzer aus und fiel erst ihrem Vater, dann Johanna um den Hals. Nur Antoni entwand sich mit gespieltem Ekel ihrer Umarmung und maulte, weil er keinen Schnaps bekam.
Später saßen die beiden Schwestern in ihrer gemeinsamen Schlafkammer auf den Betten, eine flackernde Kerze zwischen sich auf dem Nachttischchen.
»Und es macht dir auch wirklich nichts aus, wenn ich vor dir unter die Haube komme?« Dorothea war immer noch unsicher.
»Du lieber Himmel, Thea, sorg dich nicht um mich. Der Hans und ich, wir heiraten schon noch, wenn alles so weit ist. Vielleicht im nächsten Jahr … « Johanna flocht ihr widerspenstiges Haar zu einem dicken Nachtzopf. »Nach uns müsst ihr euch nicht richten.«
Thea zupfte nachdenklich an ihrem leinenen Nachthemd. »Dass der Hans und du es so lang aushaltet … Ich meine … du bist doch immer noch Jungfrau, oder?«
Johanna runzelte die Stirn. »Natürlich. Der Hans ist ein Ehrenmann.« Dann sah sie ihre Schwester misstrauisch an. »Erzähl jetzt bloß nicht, dass du … «
»Doch.« Thea schlüpfte unter die Bettdecke und zog sie bis zum Kinn. Sie lächelte selig. »Und es tut mir überhaupt nicht leid. Ach Hanna, der Heinrich ist so ein wunderbarer Mann! So zärtlich, so klug, so lieb, so … «
Johanna konnte ihre Neugier nicht bezähmen. »Sag, wie ist es?«
»Ich kann’s gar nicht beschreiben. Er hat mich gestreichelt, überall. Und dann … erst hat’s mir wehgetan, aber dann war es … wie im Himmel.« Sie seufzte sehnsüchtig und schloss die Augen. Dann schoss sie plötzlich hoch. »Du, wenn du das irgendjemandem verrätst … «
»Aber wo!«
»Schwörst du’s?«
»In Herrgotts Namen, ja! Ich schweige wie ein Grab!« Johanna blies die Kerze aus und rollte sich unter dem Federbett zusammen. Sie gönnte ihrer Schwester das Glück von Herzen, auch wenn sie nicht ganz verstehen konnte, dass sich ein kaum neunzehnjähriges Mädchen zu einem Mann hingezogen fühlte, der so alt wie ihr Vater war. Sie dachte an Hans, der ihr gerade einmal drei Jahre voraushatte. Man konnte ihn nicht unbedingt hübsch nennen, aber er war rank und schlank, einen guten Kopf größer als sie, mit grauen Augen und braunem Haar, das in einem seltsam widerspenstigen Wirbel über der Stirn nach hinten fiel. Sie waren Tür an Tür aufgewachsen, kannten sich, seit sie denken konnten. Ihre Mütter waren die besten Freundinnen gewesen und hatten damals schon scherzhaft Heiratspläne für die beiden Kinder geschmiedet. Vielleicht war das einer der Gründe, warum die Verlobung letztendlich zustande gekommen war. Hans Schramms Eltern waren vier Jahre nach Antonija Wolff gestorben, damals, als der Englische Schweiß in der Stadt umgegangen war. Hans lebte seitdem bei einer älteren Verwandten am Hasentörlein und hatte eine Stellung als Hilfsschreiber beim Rat. Und als er Johanna gefragt hatte, ob sie ihn heiraten wolle, war es ihr ganz selbstverständlich erschienen, ja zu sagen. Und auch ihr Vater hatte im Gedenken an seine Frau gern seine Einwilligung gegeben.
Lange hatte sie sich nicht eingestanden, dass sie etwas vermisste. Natürlich, sie hatten sich seitdem geküsst, manchmal waren sie auch ein bisschen weiter gegangen, draußen im Garten oder hinter den Fischkästen beim Steg an der Regnitz. Und wenn er es darauf angelegt hätte, wer weiß, vielleicht hätte sie sogar nachgegeben. Aber er hatte sie nie gedrängt. Und wenn sie ehrlich war, fühlte sie sich jetzt beinahe gekränkt durch seine Zurückhaltung. Er war doch ein Mann, zum Kuckuck! Fand er sie nicht anziehend genug? Liebte er sie nicht wirklich? Warum bestand er darauf, erst dann Hochzeit zu halten, wenn er zum Stadtschreiber aufgestiegen war? Er wusste doch, dass sie sich jederzeit ihr Erbteil auszahlen lassen konnte. Und sein Erbe war ja auch noch da, gut angelegt in Anteilen am Flusshandel.
Johanna horchte auf die ruhigen Atemzüge ihrer Schwester und schluckte die aufsteigenden Tränen hinunter. Ach, wie sehr sie Thea beneidete. Und wie sehr sie sich selber nach solcher Leidenschaft sehnte. Sie atmete einmal tief durch. Dumme Liese, sagte sie entschlossen zu sich selbst. Wichtiger als Verliebtheit ist, dass man sich blind aufeinander verlassen kann, dass man einander Freund und Vertrauter ist, dass man zusammen durch dick und dünn geht. Und er ist schließlich ein anständiger Mann, fleißig und strebsam, klug und ehrgeizig, er wird immer für mich sorgen. Und nur, weil er so große Achtung vor mir hat, bringt er mich nicht in Schwierigkeiten.
Ach Gott, wenn er’s doch nur täte!
Sie schlang die Arme eng um ihren Oberkörper, zog die Knie an und lauschte auf die tiefen Atemzüge ihrer glücklichen kleinen Schwester. Endlich, als der Nachtwächter zum dritten Mal unter ihrem Fenster vorbeikam und heiser die Stunde ausrief, schlief auch Johanna ein.
»Anno 26 ist ein gar durrer Summer gewest, das dann ein großer Mangel am Futter bei den Viehe ist gewest, das man das Viehe sehr hinweg hat müssen thun. Unt das Getreit sehr erfroren wie es geblüet hat, der Wein aber erfroren, das der 10 Theil nicht blieben ist. Auch hat die rote und weisse Ruhr, und das 2 und 3 tegig Fieber gar sehr regiret. Hierauf ein großes Flehen und Bitten unter dem gemeinen Pöffel, warumb man so lang zusehe, das allbereit die Zauberer unt Unholden die Früchten sogar verderben. Item so hat die Obrigkeyt dies Ansinnen gehört und das ihrige gethan. Alßo hat man umb Michaeli angefangen Hexen oder Unholten einzufangen und ist Elisabetha Beütlin als des Hansen Bückel Hausfrau, die erst gewest … «
»Auf, ihr Leute, auf, es eilt!« Ein Bote, dem man an der edlen Kleidung ansah, dass er von der Domburg kam, hämmerte kurz vor Morgengrauen mit der Faust an die Tür des Doktorhauses. Cornelius streckte verschlafen den Kopf zum Fenster hinaus.
»Was gibt’s in aller Herrgottsfrühe?«
»Auf Geheiß des Fürstbischofs«, keuchte der Diener atemlos, »der Doktor Weinmann soll unverzüglich in den Geyerswörth kommen. Eine hochgestellte Persönlichkeit bedarf der ärztlichen Hilfe.«
»Ich bin gleich da.«
Cornelius zog sich hastig den dunklen Umhang samt Mütze an, die ihn als studierten Physikus auswiesen, und griff beim Hinausgehen nach seiner Instrumenten- und Arzneitasche. Dann hastete er neben dem Dienstmann durch die noch nachtfeuchten Gassen.
»Wer ist denn krank?«, wollte er wissen.
»Genaues hat man mir nicht gesagt«, antwortete der Mann, »aber es wird einer von denen ganz hoch droben sein. Vor Euch musste ich noch beim Doktor Eberlein am Unteren Kaulberg vorbeigehen.«
Cornelius wunderte sich. Nachdem an der neuen Bischofsresidenz auf dem Domberg noch gearbeitet wurde, war die alte Adelsburg auf der Flussinsel Geyerswörth Sitz des Fürstbischofs. Und wenn dort jemand krank wurde, dann lag es eigentlich nahe, den bischöflichen Leibarzt zu konsultieren, der ebenfalls dort wohnte.
Der Bote erriet seine Gedanken. »Der Leibarzt des Fürstbischofs ist nicht da, Eminenz hat ihn an seinen Vetter in Würzburg ausgeliehen. Eine Nachricht ist schon dorthin abgegangen, aber die Sache kann scheint’s nicht warten, bis der Doktor wieder zurück ist. Kommt hier herein.«
Er führte den jungen Arzt durch das Portal zum Innenhof, über dem das reichverzierte fürstbischöfliche Wappen prangte. Drinnen waren die Arkaden der fünfflügeligen Anlage noch von den Nachtfackeln hell erleuchtet; ein Grüppchen Dienstmägde stand tuschelnd in einer Ecke beisammen. Cornelius betrat den Südflügel des Schlosses durch eine kleine Nebenpforte, folgte seinem Führer über Treppen und durch lange Gänge, durchquerte irgendwann den prächtigen Festsaal, bis sie endlich vor einer mächtigen Doppeltür innehielten. Bevor Cornelius anklopfen konnte, wurde einer der Flügel aufgerissen, und jemand zog ihn ins Zimmer.
Sein Blick musste sich erst an das Halbdunkel gewöhnen, das im Raum herrschte. Man hatte die Fenster geschlossen und die dicken Vorhänge zugezogen, um nach alter Sitte die gefährliche Außenluft vom Krankenzimmer abzuhalten. Überall an den Wänden brannten Kerzen, eine Anzahl Kohlebecken verbreitete unangenehme Wärme, es roch nach Räucherwerk, Fieberschweiß und saurem Urin.
Johann Georg Fuchs von Dornheim, Fürstbischof von Bamberg, lag halb aufrecht in seinem pompösen Himmelbett, mehrere dicke Federkissen im Rücken. Sein Atem ging stoßweise, er hatte eine Hand über die Augen gelegt und stöhnte leise. Cornelius sah, dass seine Füße nur bis knapp zur Hälfte der Bettstatt reichten, er musste also von ziemlich kleiner Gestalt sein. Die Wölbung der Decke zeugte jedoch von beträchtlicher Leibesfülle. Obwohl Dornheim kaum die vierzig überschritten hatte, sah er um Jahre älter aus, was nicht nur an seiner grauen Gesichtsfarbe und der schmerzverzerrten Miene lag, sondern vor allem an seiner vorgewölbten Stirnglatze und dem schütteren Haupthaar, das ihm in schweißnassen Löckchen am Kopf klebte. Auch sein umlaufender Backen- und Kinnbart begann schon, an manchen Stellen grau zu werden. Um das Prunkbett herum standen mit ratlosen Gesichtern etliche Mitglieder des Domkapitels, die nun zurücktraten, um Cornelius Platz zu machen. Jetzt erst sah er die Gestalt, die zu Dornheims Füßen vor dem Bettpfosten hockte, zusammengekauert wie ein Häuflein Elend. Das jämmerliche Bündel Mensch wiegte den Oberkörper rhythmisch vor und zurück und summte dabei leise. Cornelius erschrak ein wenig, als er sah, dass das merkwürdige Wesen dunkle, fast schwarze Haut und Haare wie verschmorte Wolle hatte: ein Mohr.
Der Bischof hielt die Finger so fest um ein Kruzifix aus schwarzen Perlen gekrampft, dass die Knöchel weiß hervortraten. Nun löste er die rechte Hand von dem kostbaren Kreuz, winkte Cornelius zu sich heran und fixierte ihn mit kleinen, weit auseinanderliegenden und in Fettfalten eingesunkenen Äuglein. Der junge Arzt trat ans Krankenlager und verbeugte sich.
»Endlich«, flüsterte der mächtigste Mann Bambergs mit weinerlicher Stimme. »Ich halte diese Schmerzen nicht mehr aus.«
»Was habt Ihr für Beschwerden, Eminenz?« Cornelius beugte sich über das Bett und fühlte dem Kranken die Stirn.
»Einen gottverfluchten Blasenstein«, ächzte der Bischof und bekreuzigte sich gleichzeitig, weil er gelästert hatte. »Das weiß ich schon lange. Aber dass es plötzlich so schlimm wird … « Wieder krallte sich seine Hand um das Kruzifix.
Der langjährige Stadtphysikus Jacob Eberlein, der schon einige Zeit vorher eingetroffen war, nickte Cornelius grüßend zu, hielt ihm ein bauchiges Harnglas hin und schwenkte es. Der Urin darin war blutig rot.
»Der Stein muss scharfkantig sein, er hat die Blasenwand aufgerissen. Und er verursacht starke Koliken. Fieber ist auch schon da. Eigentlich wäre dies ein Fall für einen Wundarzt oder Steinschneider, was denkt Ihr, Herr Collega?«
»Habt Ihr den Stein schon getastet?«
Der alte Eberlein runzelte die Stirn. »Wie meint Ihr?«
Cornelius nahm einen Fingerling aus Schafsdarm aus seiner Tasche, benetzte ihn mit Kamillenöl und stülpte ihn über. »Eminenz, würdet Ihr Euch aufdecken, damit ich Euch untersuchen kann?«
Der Bischof schlug das Deckbett zur Seite, zog sein Nachtgewand hoch und beugte die Beine. Vorsichtig legte Cornelius die Linke auf seinen Unterbauch und schob dann den Finger langsam in das Rektum. Dornheim stöhnte laut, während Cornelius den Stein ertastete.
»Da ist er«, sagte der junge Arzt, »groß wie ein Hühnerei und mit mehreren scharfen Spitzen.« Er zog die Hände zurück und streifte den Fingerling ab. »Bei Irrtümern der Ausscheidungsorgane löst sich das Element Alkali aus dem salzigen Urin und trifft mit der Säure aus dem Verdauungskanal zusammen. Das Produkt schlägt sich zuerst als feiner Sand nieder, aus dessen Zusammenlagerung dann Steine entstehen. Kleine Exemplare gehen manchmal durch die Harnröhre ab oder können aufgelöst werden. Doch hier gibt es nur eine Möglichkeit: Wir müssen schneiden, Eminenz.«
Der Fürstbischof schüttelte wild den Kopf wie ein ängstliches Kind. »Ich habe schon Männer nach einem Steinschnitt gesehen. Das Wasser ging ihnen durch ein Loch zwischen den Beinen ab, das nicht zugeheilt war. Sie stanken widerlich. Und sie konnten nicht mehr … Ihr wisst schon, was. Nein, ein Schnitt kommt nicht in Frage. Ach, Gott!« Erneut wurde er von einer Kolik geschüttelt und wand sich in den Kissen.
»Nun, ich denke, wir versuchen es erst einmal mit einem Aufguss aus Steinbrech, Petersilie und Eppich. Und Mauerpfeffer, weil dessen kalte Natur der Körperhitze entgegenwirkt.« Jacob Eberlein schaltete sich ein. Man konnte ihm ansehen, dass er sich an diesem heiklen Fall lieber nicht die Finger verbrennen wollte. »Es ist sowieso kein Steinschneider in der Stadt, und unserem Bader möchte ich diese heikle Aufgabe nicht zutrauen … «
»In diesem Stadium der Krankheit hilft Steinbrech nichts mehr, das wisst Ihr genauso gut wie ich.« Cornelius schüttelte den Kopf. »Die Schmerzen werden nicht mehr aufhören, im Gegenteil, es wird noch ärger. Irgendwann wird der Stein den Blasenausgang verstopfen, spätestens dann bleibt nur noch das Messer. Wenn nicht vorher das Fieber aufsteigt und die Ausscheidungsorgane versagen, was vermutlich in den nächsten Tagen geschehen wird. Dann wird der Körper langsam vergiftet, und es bleibt nur noch ein qualvoller Tod. Eminenz«, er wandte sich an den Fürstbischof, der das Gespräch mit Schweißperlen auf der Stirn verfolgt hatte. »Ich kann die Operation sofort durchführen. Und ich bin überzeugt, dass die Wunde heilen wird, ohne dass sich eine Urinfistel entwickelt. Es gibt da eine neue Methode … «
Der Fürstbischof war vor Angst noch bleicher geworden. »Gnädiger Herr Jesus, also habe ich keine Wahl, das meint Ihr doch, oder?« Und mit dünner Stimme fügte er hinzu. »Aber was ist mit … Ich will hinterher noch ein richtiger Mann sein!« Der Gedanke, die Vorzüge seiner jungen Mätresse nicht mehr genießen zu können, machte ihm beinahe noch mehr Angst als die Operation.
»Ich verspreche Euch, dass der Steinschnitt, wie ich ihn durchführe, keine Auswirkung auf die Potenz haben wird.«
Dornheim krümmte sich wieder. »Wie kommt es, dass Ihr selber schneiden könnt? Ihr seid doch studierter Physikus?«
Cornelius nickte. »Ja, aber ich habe in Padua und Prag auch die Anatomie studiert. Und ich war außerdem bei einem Wundarzt in der Lehre. Es gibt neue Instrumente, mit denen die Operation besser durchgeführt werden kann als noch vor einigen Jahren. Ich habe sie schon mehrfach erprobt. Aber natürlich, wenn Ihr lieber warten wollt, bis Euer Leibarzt zurück ist oder ein Wundarzt herbeigeholt … «
Der Fürstbischof stöhnte. »Wie lange gebt Ihr mir, wenn ich warte?«
Die beiden Ärzte sahen sich an. »Vielleicht eine Woche, Eminenz«, antwortete Eberlein, »bevor es kritisch wird. Und bedenkt, wenn die Entzündung zu weit fortgeschritten ist, dann kann kein Schnitt und auch keine Arznei mehr helfen.«
»Garantiert Ihr mir einen guten Ausgang, Doktor Weinmann?«
»Meiner Erfahrung nach könnt Ihr wieder ganz gesund werden«, meinte Cornelius vorsichtig. »Aber: Der Arzt behandelt, und Gott heilt, so sagt man doch?«
Dornheim grunzte. »Nur, wenn der Arzt gut ist, dann tut sich Gott leichter mit dem Heilen, hm?« Er küsste sein Kruzifix, rang sich ein verkniffenes Lächeln ab und sah die beiden Doktoren an.
»Also gut. Ich vertraue Euch und dem Allmächtigen. Er wird mir wohl beistehen, daran glaube ich mit aller Gewisslichkeit, laus deo in aeternum.« Der Fürstbischof tat einen tiefen Atemzug und deutete mit spitzem Finger auf Cornelius. »Aber wenn Ihr es versaut, dann gnade Euch Gott.«
Cornelius wandte sich zur Tür. »Ich hole mein Schneidzeug. Lasst derweil einen großen Tisch herbeitragen, Schüsseln und Leintücher. Und lasst die Fenster öffnen. Wir brauchen Licht und frische Luft.«
Eine Stunde später war alles bereit. Der Operationstisch stand vor der Fensterfront und der Fürstbischof hockte darauf, nackt bis auf ein kurzes Leinenhemd und das schwarze Kruzifix, das man ihm an einer Goldkette um den Hals gelegt hatte. Mit dem Rücken lehnte er gegen einen Diener, der ihn mit den Armen umfangen hielt. Er hatte die Beine weit gespreizt; zwei weitere Diener standen links und rechts von ihm und hielten ihn an Knien und Knöcheln. Ein fest zugebundenes Leintuch um den Unterbauch sorgte dafür, dass die Blase tief ins kleine Becken gedrückt wurde.
Cornelius hatte die Hände und auch seine Instrumente in Essigwasser gewaschen. Er arbeitete mit der »großen Gerätschaft«, das waren Skalpell, eine dünne Rinnensonde, die Spreizzange, der rundmaulige Steinlöffel, den man auch Höcklin nannte, und ein scherenartiges Schraubzeug zum Zerbrechen großer Steine. Alles lag auf einem niedrigen Tischchen bereit.
»Ich werde weder Nerven, Adern oder Muskeln dauerhaft verletzen«, beruhigte Cornelius den Fürstbischof. Dornheim fing an, laut zu beten. Dann führte Cornelius die Rinnensonde vorsichtig durch die Harnröhre ein, bis sie tief in die Blase vordrang. Er tastete nach dem Stein und versuchte, ihn nach unten zu drücken. Der Bischof hielt mit seinem Singsang inne und versteifte sich vor Schmerz. Dann steckte ihm jemand schnell ein stoffumwickeltes Stück Lindenholz zwischen die Zähne, und er biss zu.
»Jetzt gut festhalten, Männer.« Cornelius nahm das Skalpell und machte einen entschlossenen, schnellen Schnitt durch den Damm. Dornheim heulte auf und wand sich im eisernen Griff der Diener. Nun musste es schnell gehen. Während Eberlein, der sich zur Assistenz hatte überreden lassen, das Blut unaufhörlich mit Schwämmen abtupfte, spreizte Cornelius mit der Zange den Schnitt auf, suchte und fasste dann mit dem Schraubzeug den Stein. Nach mehreren Drehungen des Gewindes gab es ein knirschendes Geräusch, und das Gebilde war in drei Teile zersprungen. Cornelius ertastete sie nacheinander mit dem Steinlöffel und zog sie vorsichtig durch die Öffnung.
»Es ist geschafft, Euer Eminenz.« Erleichterung schwang in Cornelius’ Stimme.
Der Fürstbischof stöhnte laut als Antwort, während der junge Arzt ruhig weiterhantierte. Mit einer Art Klistier, in dem sich Essigwasser mit Alaunverdünnung und etwas Tannin befand, spülte er die Blase gut aus, um alle Reste des Steines vollständig zu entfernen. Dann begann er, die Wunde mit einem Seidenfaden zu nähen. Dornheim liefen die Tränen aus den Augen, er hatte den Knebel ausgespuckt und biss nun die Zähne so fest zusammen, dass es laut knirschte. Dann, nachdem Cornelius noch ein silbernes Röhrchen in die Wunde eingelegt hatte, um einen guten Abfluss des Urins zu erreichen, hatte der Patient die Prozedur überstanden. Man hob ihn vorsichtig zurück in sein Bett, wo er sofort vor Erschöpfung einschlief.
Johanna summte ein Lied, während sie mit flinken Händen die Zutaten für ein Zahnpulver abwog und in die bereitstehende Reibschüssel schüttete. Ihr Vater hatte sich, wie jeden Tag um diese Zeit, zu einem Schläfchen in seine Kammer zurückgezogen. Die Apothekerstochter liebte diese ruhige Stunde, in der sie Muße fand, neue Rezepturen auszuprobieren oder Liegengebliebenes endlich zu erledigen. Längst wusste sie genug über Kräuter, Mineralien, natürliche und chymische Substanzen, um ihrem Vater die meisten Arbeiten abzunehmen, was sich dieser gern gefallen ließ. »Es ist ein Kreuz, dass die Johanna das Geschäft nicht übernehmen kann«, lamentierte er oft, »das Zeug dazu hätte sie.« Aber einem Weib blieb diese Möglichkeit verschlossen, so lange sie nicht Witwe und damit geschäftsfähig war. So lautete das Gesetz.
Antoni, auf dem alle Hoffnungen seines Vaters ruhten, saß neben Johanna auf einem Schemel und beobachtete jede ihrer Bewegungen.
»Lies die Rezeptur noch einmal laut vor, Toni, damit du sie dir merkst.«
Folgsam griff der Junge nach dem dicken, ledergebundenen Folianten, der vor ihm auf dem Tisch lag.
»Also … Pulver zum Zähn-Putzen. Man muss nehmen ein Pfund trocken Brot, und das muss durch und durch gebrennt werden, glühend wie die Kohlen. Hernach wird’s gar sauber aus dem Feuer genommen, dass kein Aschen daran bleibt, und auf ein Stein gelegt, dass es kalt wird. Hernach soll man’s so klein als möglich stoßen.«
