The story of the novel begins with the arrival of an answer to the journalist Nader, in which a girl named Fatima addresses him, telling him that his fame is what prompted her to send him this desperate letter, but the problem is not her problem, but rather a problem in the neighbors' house. They refused for her to communicate with the journalist Nader, but after hearing about Nader's distinguished work made them convinced that he might have the solution, as the situation was tragic, especially if it involved helpless children, and those responsible for the problem stipulated that they would not tell him more than this, and that when he came to meet them, they would tell him the details. So Nader goes to Sharqia, specifically to the Zagazig area, to see what these people are up to.
